How Much will the Dalton Sales Tax Cost you?
QUEEN’S PARK – Today Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford, launched a petition against the McGuinty government’s harmonized sales tax which will increase the cost of hundreds of items that Ontarians use everyday.
“Dalton’s HST will mean a significant price increase on everything from fuelling up the family car to haircuts to taking the dog to the vet,” said Hardeman. “When so many families are struggling to make ends meet it is simply unfair to hit them with a massive tax increase.”
As part of the recent budget the McGuinty government announced a 13% harmonized sales tax – a combination of the GST and PST. However the new tax will apply to many items that were previously PST exempt resulting in an 8% increase on hundreds of items.
Hardeman also launched a HST calculator that will let people figure out how much the HST will cost them by inputting their normal spending on just a few of the items that will be subject to the 8% increase.
The HST calculator is available at www.ErnieHardemanMPP.com/hstgrab.php
- A Woodstock woman who is worried her husband might lose his job calculated that this tax grab will cost her $967.28 per year or $39,658 over her lifetime.
- A working senior from Caledon estimated this will cost him $846.40 per year or $11,850 over his lifetime.
- A mother of two from Sudbury calculated that this will cost her $859.20 per year or $36,946 over her lifetime.
“For a senior on a fixed income an 8% increase in items like fuel to heat their home and electricity may mean that they can no longer keep their house,” said Hardeman. “For parents this may mean some tough choices on what they and their kids can do without.”
