Dalton gives Ontario tax increase for Canada Day

QUEEN’S PARK – Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford, said that it was sad that as Ontarians celebrate Canada Day this year they will be hit with Dalton McGuinty’s latest tax increase – the HST.

“Only a Premier as out of touch as Dalton McGuinty would chose Canada Day - a day of celebration and patriotism – to take more money away from Ontario families,” said Hardeman.

Hardeman pointed out that commuters and rural families who depend on their vehicles will be particularly hard hit by the 8% increase on gasoline.

“To add insult to injury, the McGuinty Liberal government will be collecting 8% not just on the cost of the gasoline, but also on the 14.7 cents tax we already pay to the province for every litre of gasoline,” said Hardeman. “In other words the McGuinty government is charging a tax on a tax!”
Some of the items set to increase in price after the HST kicks in include:

  • Hydro
  • Home heating fuel
  • Natural gas
  • Gasoline
  • Vitamins
  • Internet service
  • Financial advisory services
  • Mutual fund fees
  • Condo fees
  • Retirement & nursing home costs
  • Air plane, train and bus tickets
  • Funerals and estate planning costs
  • Home renovation & repairs
  • Lawn maintenance
  • Snow removal
  • Golf green and driving range fees
  • Bicycles and bicycle safety equipment
  • Gym memberships
  • Trips to the veterinarian
  • Haircuts

The Ontario PC Caucus and PC Party leader Tim Hudak fought against this tax increase, but Dalton McGuinty refused to listen to concerns about the impact on Ontario families.
