For immediate release McGuinty Liberals Continue Slush Fund Cover-up TORONTO – Today the McGunity Liberals used their majority to block an opposition day motion which required the Minister of Citizenship to table in the Ontario Legislature information and documents on grants given to cultural groups with Liberal ties. “Dalton McGuinty and his Ministers are attempting to cover-up their political slush fund with refusals to produce information and a misdirected investigation that reports after the next provincial election,” said Hardeman. “The people of Ontario aren’t that easily fooled.” Today’s opposition day motion called for the Minister of Citizenship to table in the legislature the following items:
Over the last two weeks information has surfaced on numerous grants that were given to groups with Liberal ties without an application process. The availability of the money was not advertised to the public and groups without inside connections were not given any chance at the funding. On April 26, the Liberals used their majority in the Standing Committee on Public Accounts to block a motion that would have had the Auditor General investigate whether the money was distributed properly. Instead the Liberals forced through a motion that would have the Ministry of Citizenship investigate the groups that received funding and report back in six months, several weeks after the next provincial election. “The Liberals have created a sham process that looks at the groups that received funding instead of investigating how the grants were determined – which is where there is a problem,” said Hardeman, vice-chair of the Public Accounts committee. “If there are questions about the groups that received the money the government should have asked those before they wrote the cheque, not after.” -30- For more information, contact:
