| For immediate release ONTARIO FAMILIES HIT WITH HYDRO INCREASE ON MAY 1ST
WOODSTOCK – Ernie Hardeman, Oxford MPP, warned that the McGuinty government’s latest hydro rate increase will go into effect on Sunday May 1 “Ontario families are fed up,” said Hardeman. “They are already doing everything they can to conserve and yet their hydro bills keep increasing.” The rate increase which goes into effect on May 1, 2011 will cost Ontario families an average of $75 more per year. “The McGuinty government policies such as HST and Green Energy experiments have lead to dramatic increases in Hydro costs and Ontario families are paying the price,” said Hardeman. “The increased cost of living is forcing seniors out of their homes and causing families to make tough choices about what their kids can do without.” As of May 1st hydro rates have increased 84 % under Dalton McGuinty. For families and small businesses with activated smart meters the increase is 150 %. The fall economic statement released by the government on November 18, 2010 predicted that hydro rates would increase by 46% over the next five years due to transmission infrastructure and green energy costs. “Dalton McGuinty has to stop signing expensive new green energy contracts and dumping that cost on Ontario families,” said Hardeman. “Many Ontario families are already struggling to make ends meet. They deserve better than a government and a Premier who treats them as an endless piggybank.” - 30 - For more information, contact:
