Wilkinson calls Eco-Fees "right thing to do"
“The consumers of Ontario were clear that they do not support eco-fees,” said Hardeman. “This government tried to pretend that they were shelving the plan, but Wilkinson’s statement shows that the McGuinty government and the Revenue Minister are still in favour of putting these costs back on taxpayers.” John Wilkinson, Perth Wellington MPP, told a group of Flamborough business people last week that eco-fees were “the right thing to do” according to reports in local paper. Wilkinson also told the group that HST will apply to the eco-fees. “Seniors and families are already struggling with the effects of the HST which added 8% to the cost of gasoline, electricity and hundreds of other items and services,” said Hardeman. “For Wilkinson to say it is the “right” thing to add to their burden shows that he is out of touch with the average Ontarians.” The opening line of the July 20 government news release posted on Wilkinson’s website reads: “The eco fees on consumer products that came into effect on July 1st have now been eliminated as the McGuinty government stepped in today and took action.” The announcement was made shortly after Canadian Tire announced they would no longer charge eco-fees and Tim Hudak announced that if elected a PC government would repeal them. “The McGuinty government is trying to have it both ways – they are claiming credit for eliminating the mess they made, while leaving the door open to sneak eco-fees back in after the 90 day review,” said Hardeman. “Wilkinson’s statement made it pretty clear what his vote will be when it comes to the cabinet table.” - 30 - For more information, contact:
