Support for the Hawkins Gignac Act and making carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in all Ontario homes

As an insurer, The Co-operators regularly promotes home safety with our clients.  Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer and the more that we can do to promote the awareness of this household danger and ways to protect our families, the better off we will all be.   The Co-operators is supportive of legislative changes that would reduce the tragic toll associated with this danger and encourage greater household safety. We encourage  MPP's from all parties to work together to pass this bill and help save lives.

During the early part of my career I attended several tragic situations involving carbon monoxide exposure.  People would be found in their beds and it would be determined that the CO from a vehicle that had been left running in an attached garage had seeped into the house.  As CO is odorless, tasteless, and colourless there was no warning that this silent killer was even a concern.
I believe that tragedies like these are 100% avoidable.  Many Cities have passed by-laws that require CO detectors to be installed in all dwelling units where a fuel fired appliance exists.  I believe that if this was made law for the entire Province of Ontario we would all but eliminate needless deaths due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
Frank Lamie, Deputy Fire Chief, Toronto Fire Services

Colourless, odourless and tasteless – the only way humans can detect carbon monoxide is with a working CO alarm.  Making CO alarms mandatory in all Ontario homes, so more families can be saved from such a terrible loss, is the right thing to do.
Victoria Maybee, External Relations Manager, Duracell Canada

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer. With the introduction of Hawkins Gignac Act, this will ensure that all homes in Ontario will have early detection on all levels of the residences and that they are installed and maintained properly.
Dave Thomson, past president, Firefighter’s Association of Ontario

Just like its province-wide smoke alarm law, Ontario’s carbon monoxide law will save lives.  Installing a CO alarm is the only way to give families early warning of the presence of this silent killer.  Combined with professional heating system and appliance inspections each year, a carbon monoxide alarm provides peace of mind.  The Ontario government should honor the memory of the Hawkins family with this new law, so that other heartbreaking tragedies can be prevented.
