Hardeman wants LORD’S PRAYER IN ONTARIO LEGISLATURE

WOODSTOCK – Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford, is launching a petition to urge Dalton McGuinty to respect the traditions of the Ontario Legislature by leaving the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer as part of its daily proceedings.

“It is important that we respect and maintain the traditions and history of the Ontario Legislature. Part of that tradition is keeping the Lord’s Prayer,” said Hardeman.  “The focus should be on building upon tradition rather than abandoning it.”

Hardeman made the comments following a recent letter issued by Dalton McGuinty calling for the province to ‘move beyond’ the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in the Legislature. The petition says “Recognizing the diversity of the people of Ontario should be an inclusive process, not one which excludes traditions such as the Lord’s Prayer.”

Hardeman also called on McGuinty to put his focus towards the important issues facing the people of Ontario.

“Getting rid of the Lord’s Prayer shouldn’t be the Premier’s biggest priority,” said Hardeman. “The people of Oxford want their government to focus on protecting jobs, building our new hospital, helping farmers, and ensuring the education system provides our kids with the skills they need.”

Hardeman added an all-party committee should review a range of reforms for the operations of the Ontario Legislature, and any changes should respect the tradition and history of Ontario.

The petition to maintain the Lord’s Prayer is available at Ernie Hardeman’s constituency office at 12 Perry St. in Woodstock or by visiting his website at
