Liberals Never Let Facts Get in the Way of a Good Quote

Affordable Housing Reality Check

The McGuinty Liberals continue to demonstrate that they will say anything to get elected, even if the facts don’t support their statements.

Fiberal Quote #1
“I just want to tell my friend [DiNovo] that if she wants to be really helpful on this matter rather than just political, she could simply assist us in our call for the federal government not to try and pretend that the money for housing honours its commitment on the Canada-Ontario agreement.”
Greg Sorbara in the Ontario Legislature, October 25, 2006
Reality:

The hold-up in sending out cheques for affordable housing is the provincial government – not the federal government. The federal government has given the province $400 million for housing which is currently sitting in a trust fund while the Liberal Cabinet decides whether or not they should take some of the money out of affordable housing to fund their other projects.

The money was given for housing. The Liberal government had no problem announcing the funding. For once the Liberals should follow through on their commitment.

Fiberal Quote #2

“Currently we have 6,524 units of affordable rental housing stock in place.”
John Gerretsen in the Ontario Legislature, October 25, 2006

Reality:
In reality only 2,112 units are built and occupied. The rest are in the construction or planning stages. It is unfair to claim that you have housing stock in place when it is still on paper.

Fiberal Quote #3
I want to tell my friend that we're right on schedule with the campaign commitments and that affordable housing is getting built.” Greg Sorbara in the Ontario Legislature, October 25, 2006
Reality:
It must be a new kind of Liberal math where completion of 2,112 units after three years means that you are on track to build 20,000 units in four years. The reality is that this is still a Liberal broken promise.

Fiberal Quote #4

"The matter with respect to the housing trust has absolutely nothing to do with our commitment to build housing in this province. We're going to build 15,000 new units, and we're going to have a minimum of 5,000 housing allowance units."
John Gerretsen in the Ontario Legislature, October 25, 2006

Reality:

The Liberal campaign commitment was to build 20,000 units of affordable housing. Trying to change the campaign promise three years after you made the commitment does not change the fact that it is a broken promise.

“Together, we are going to build 20,000 new units for needy Ontario families. We are also going to provide a housing allowance in keeping with Anne Golden’s recommendations to help 35,000 families who just can’t pay the rent with the money that they are presently earning.”
Dalton McGuinty, November 24, 2003, Launch of Growing Strong Communities

If questions around the housing trust have “absolutely nothing to do” with the Liberal commitment why was Gerretsen quoted as saying:

“Until we actually can utilize the money for housing programs, it's always possible that something can happen to it, so (housing providers) are concerned, I'm concerned, but as far as I know, the money is there for the housing portfolio.”
John Gerretsen, Toronto Star, October 25, 2006

Fiberal Quote #5

“Had we wanted to move along with this program quicker than we have? Absolutely. We're doing our best to move it along as quickly as we can…”
John Gerretsen in Estimates Committee, October 11, 2006

Reality:

The Liberal government is not doing everything that they can. They have $400 million that has been allocated for housing sitting in a trust account while they fight with the Federal government about other transfer money.

In addition, their mismanagement of the province is resulting in job losses and high taxes that are increasing the need for affordable housing. Since the beginning of 2005 Ontario has lost 89,100 manufacturing jobs.
