QUEEN’S PARK – Today in the Ontario Legislature Ernie Hardeman MPP for Oxford urged everyone to learn about Oxford’s hero Reverend George Leslie MacKay by watching the documentary on Saturday November 25. “I am pleased to stand in the Ontario Legislature today to talk about an Oxford County hero – Reverend George Leslie MacKay,” said Hardeman. “MacKay not only shared his beliefs with the people of Taiwan, he was responsible for creating over 60 chapels, several schools and a hospital.” Reverend George Leslie MacKay, who was raised in Zorra, travelled to Taiwan as a missionary in 1872. While there he practiced medicine and dentistry as well as preaching. Due to the connection created by MacKay there have been numerous visits between residents of Oxford and residents of Taiwan, including the visit to Oxford in 2000 when the Tamsui high school tug of war team competed against Zorra’s team. The Town of Tamsui was twinned with the County of Oxford in 2000. In 2004 the Aletheia University, part of the Oxford University that MacKay helped create, gave the County of Oxford a statue of MacKay that today stands in the County square. The OMNI/Rogers documentary on Reverend MacKay, entitled The Black Bearded Barbarian of Taiwan was produced by Postmodern Productions. The documentary was filmed last year in Taiwan by a team of scholars and film makers. The documentary will air on Saturday November 25 at 7:00 PM on OMNI 2. “I encourage everyone to take the time to watch the documentary and learn about this legendary man from Oxford County,” said Hardeman. - 30 - Statement in the Ontario Legislature On Reverend MacKay
