MCGUINTY LIBERALS NEED TO GET TOUGH ON BAIL

QUEEN’S PARK – Today in the Ontario Legislature the Progressive Conservative Party brought forward an Opposition Day motion calling on the McGuinty Liberals to be tougher on bail.

“Ontarians should not have to fear for their safety. No one should have to feel uncomfortable walking down the street in Woodstock at night,” said Hardeman “No one should have to fear that someone who has already been arrested and identified as dangerous will be free to commit another violent crime.”

Among other things the Opposition Day motion calls on the government to:

adopt a policy directing Crown Attorneys to oppose the making of all orders for bail for violent crimes;
seek a review of all orders granting bail for charges involving violent crimes; and
start collecting statistics relating to bail orders and court proceedings to provide the public with an accurate picture of the functioning of the justice system.

Over the last few years there have been alarming number of cases where people accused of violent crimes have either disappeared or committed another crime while released on bail.

On November 23 the Conservative Federal government introduced legislation to reverse the onus of bail for people involved in gun crimes. This means that people arrested for gun crimes will have to demonstrate why they should not stay in custody until their trial.

“While the McGuinty Liberals are quick to take credit for Ottawa’s actions they have been slow to take any action to protect Ontarians from violent crime,” Hardeman added.

On December 15, 2005 the Progressive Conservative Party released a report on youth violence called Time for Action. The report was issued after a year of consultations and contains 22 recommendations on reducing crime, including the need to get tougher on bail. The report is available at http://www.ontariopc.com/documents/TFA_Report.pdf.

“I refuse to accept that the government should just sit back and focus on their reelection instead of taking action to get violent offender off the streets and reduce crime,” said Hardeman.
