First Dutch Flag Raising at the Legislature

QUEEN’S PARK – Today in honour of the first annual Dutch Heritage Month a Dutch flag was raised outside the Ontario Legislature for the first time in history.

“This is a proud moment for Dutch Canadians,” said Ernie Hardeman, MPP Oxford, who attended the event. “I’m pleased that the strong relationship between the Netherlands and Canada is being recognized.”

Dutch Heritage Month was created through a private members bill introduced by PC MPP Elizabeth Witmer. It was passed unanimously in the Ontario Legislature on March 24, 2011.

“It is especially fitting that the flag was raised on Liberation Day,” said Hardeman. “It was on May 5, 1945 that the Allied forces, made up predominantly of Canadian soldiers, liberated the Netherlands from occupation.”
