| For Immediate Release Bill to cut HST Passes despite Liberal Opposition QUEEN’S PARK – Today a private members bill that would remove HST from the cost of home heating fuel passed second reading despite efforts of the Liberals who voted against it. “Today was a great example of two parties working together to try and give people the cost of living relief that they told us they need,” said Hardeman. “We recognize that in Ontario heating our homes is a necessity and we believe that the fact that HST added 8% to that cost is wrong.” The private members bill was introduced by Michael Mantha from Algoma Manitoulin. It passed 54-50. After passing second reading it will be referred to committee and must come back to the legislature for third reading before becoming law. “We need to take action to deal with the challenges facing province – creating jobs, strengthening our economy and providing cost of living relief to Ontario families,” said Hardeman. “The throne speech and economic statement failed to provide that but the opposition parties will continue to work to address these issues.” Earlier this week in response to the throne speech Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak moved amendments that implement a wage freeze for government employees and reform the apprenticeship system. “I hope that in this minority the McGuinty government will chose to work with the other parties to deliver what Ontario families need, such as relief on their home heating bills,” said Hardeman. - 30 -
