Release Where’s the Money? – Agriculture Minister Doesn’t Know Queen’s Park -- Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford and agriculture critic for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario rose in the legislature today to ask Steve Peters, Minister of Agriculture and Food one more time, when farmers could expect to receive the money that the Minister promised them back in March. “On March 30, our leader, John Tory asked you when farmers could expect to get their cheques, commented Ernie Hardeman.” “Your response was, and I quote, those cheques should be in the mail within the next two to three weeks.” “Well, that time has long since passed, and the farmers in my riding of Oxford haven’t received anything, stated Hardeman.” “Farmers continue to call Agricorp, and have been told the cheques have not been issued yet.” In his response the Minister stated that cheques were in the mail and that we should call Agricorp to verify this. Well, as recently as this morning, my office called Agricorp, and they informed us that the cheques haven’t been issued and it could be another couple of weeks before the farmers get any money, said Hardeman.” Hardeman reminded the Minister that the day the Minister made the announcement, he told farmers that the additional funds would be in their hands prior to the planting season. Well, farmers, are in the field and planting now, at least those that can afford to. Other farmers are faced with banks refusing to loan them money so they can plant their crops this year. Why? Because they have no faith in your support of Ontario’s farmers. When will hard-pressed farmers receive the help you promised and said you would deliver within two weeks? So far they’ve heard nothing and received absolutely nothing, Farmers deserve better.
